Mocha vs. the Grand Sumo

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

Mocha went to the Cupertino Cherry Blossom Festival. The highlights were the San Jose Taiko and the Sumo wrestling demonstrations.

The Taiko showThe Taiko show (see video) is always fun, blending the traditional Japanese rhythm with Latin, Caribean, Rock, and African influences. The force and energy can not compare to those Kodo monks from Japan, but their choreography is entertaining, showing the spirit of youth and fun. The clapping from the audience after each piece really got Mocha excited (and a little confused).

Sumo demonstration Sumo Wrestling demo was new to us this year. They invited the current Sumo wrestling world champion Byambajav Ulambayar of Mongolia plus several more US campaigns. Byambajav was also a judo expert, he was born and raised in Mongolia and spent 5 years in Japan for Sumo training. They demonstrated how they warm up, the winning techniques, allowed (slapping) vs disallowed techniques (punching & kicking), and demonstrated several matches (see video here.). They also invited some kids to come up and “fight” against the professionals, it was quite entertaining (see video). They explained that the game was won by either getting the opponent on the floor or out of the ring, and told us how they train. Professional Sumo wrestlers get up 5am and work out with an empty stomach until noon, have a giant lunch, and take a nap, they eat another big dinner before going to sleep.

We also enjoyed the delicious Hawaiian icy. It was great, they gave us a huge ice ball, and a large number of selections of self-serve flavors such as watermelon, green apple, and peach. However, it was quite a mystery how this huge ice ball quickly disappear in front of our eyes.

There were also many Japanese Akitas and Sheba Inus at the festival. With all these attractive senses, it was tough for Mocha to leave the festival.

Non-drinker’s family Napa trip

Saturday, April 21st, 2007

The family decided to take a trip with Mocha to Napa for a quick family vacation. We happen to be a family of non-wine drinkers with a dog. Can we still have fun at the wine-country? Yep. Vacation Girl and Weekend boy had a very relaxing time with the boys and Mocha.

Here was the itinerary:

  • Day 1: arriving at Napa, staying at the Embassy Suites, and took a little nappa
    • Dinner at Sushi Mambo, Napa, 4* (4 stars out of 5), $$ (about $20 per person)
    • Family night, watched “A Night At the Museum” together
  • Day 2: a little nature and a little shopping around
    • Free breakfast at Embassy Suites 4*
    • AM: Petrified Forest with Mocha (about $4 per person)
    • PM: Culinary Institute of America tour
    • PM: Shopped around St. Helena and Calistoga
    • late lunch at: Gillwood’s Restaurant, St. Helena, 3*, $ (about $10 per person, not too hungry)
    • Mocha had a very enjoyable day at the forest and shopping with us
    • Dinner at Piccolino’s, 5*, $$$ (about $25 per person), very enjoyable dinner with Jazz
    • Word Thief night, Weekend boy was the big winner, got over 200 points for the first time
  • Day 3: university tour, jungle tour, and Sonoma
    • Free breakfast at Emabssy Suites 3*
    • AM: tour of the Sonoma State University
    • PM: tour of Safari West
    • Evening: tour around Sonoma City center: Mission and shops
    • Dinner at: Mary’s Pizza Shack, Sonoma, 2*, $$ (about $15 per person), high hopes but a little disappointing, probably because none of us ordered pizza!
    • Poor Mocha stayed at the room by himself all day, but was rewarded with a huge left over meatball which he finished in 5 sec.
    • Sudoku night, also watched a little of the ridiculous Charles Angeles movie
  • Day 4: Copia Museum tour and outlet mall
    • Free breakfast at Embassy Suites 2* (starting to get a little repetitive)
    • AM: tour of the Copia Museum ($5 per adult, $4 per student, 12 and under free), very different kind of museum, very enjoyable for everyone in the family
    • PM: it started raining, what perfect time for shopping at the Premium Outlet mall before we head home! Mocha had a good time people watching!

Accommodation:

  • Embassy Suites is a very nice hotel, we had a special ‘pet friendly room’, there was no carpet which made it nice and clean.
  • As with other Embassy Suites, there was a master bed room, and a full size pull out bed in the living room. There was a mini bar with frig, microwave and sink, very convenient.
  • Only draw back was our room was next to the maids quarter, between 8am - 10pm, the dryer was going on/off with noise and shakes, and the workers walking by all the time chatting with each other from time to time.
  • The charge was $219 plus $27 tax per night, a little steep but it seems to be the going rate in the wine-country which in general did not seem as pet and kids friendly (at least comparing to Cambria which we went in February and it was extremely pet and kids friendly), well, what do you expect? :)
  • They were going to charge us $75 pet cleaning but I did not see it on the bill (yet)

Hits: Everyone enjoyed the Safari West and Petrified Forest, the school tour was informative, it was kind of a small Cal State campus (at least comparing to the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo we visited in February!).

I thought Copia was really interesting with a lot of multi-media displays upstairs, a gallery with giant pictures of what food different nationalities eat (pictures from the hungry Planet), great shops downstairs, and edible garden tour outside,
Misses: nothing really bad, although we are not drinkers, we really wanted to get on a wine tour, we have to come back again.

A Touching Story…

Sunday, April 15th, 2007

She jumped up as soon as she saw the surgeon come out of the operating room. She said: “How is my little boy? Is he going to be all right? When can I see him?”

The surgeon said, “I’m sorry. We did all we could, but your boy didn’t make it.”

Sally said, “Why do little children get cancer? Doesn’t God care any more? Where were you, God, when my son needed you?”

The surgeon asked, “Would you like some time alone with your son? One of the nurses will be out in a few minutes, before he’s transported to the university.”

Sally asked the nurse to stay with her while she said good-bye to son. She ran her fingers lovingly through his thick red curly hair.

“Would you like a lock of his hair?” the nurse asked.

Sally nodded yes. The nurse cut a lock of the boy’s hair, put it in a plastic bag and handed it to

Sally. The mother said, “It was Jimmy’s idea to donate his body to the University for Study. He said it might help somebody else. “I said no at first, but Jimmy said, ‘Mom, I won’t be using it after I die. Maybe it will help some other little boy spend one more day with his Mom.” She went on, “My Jimmy had a heart of gold. Always thinking of someone else. Always wanting to help others if he could.”

Sally walked out of Children’s mercy Hospital for the last time, after spending most of the last six months there. She put the bag with Jimmy’s belongings on the seat beside her in the car. The drive home was difficult. It was even harder to enter the empty house. She carried Jimmy’s belongings, and the plastic bag with the lock of his hair to her son’s room. She started placing the model cars and other personal things back in his room exactly where he had always kept them. She laid down across his bed and, hugging his pillow, cried herself to sleep.

It was around midnight when Sally awoke. Laying beside her on the bed was a folded letter. The letter said:
“Dear Mom, I know you’re going to miss me; but don’t think that I will ever forget you, or stop loving you, just ’cause I’m not around to say I LOVE YOU. I will always love you, Mom, even more with each day. Someday we will see each other again. Until then, if you want to adopt a little boy so you won’t be so lonely, that’s okay with me. He can have my room and old stuff to play with. But, if you decide to get a girl instead, she probably wouldn’t like the same things us boys do. You’ll have to buy her dolls and stuff girls like, you know. Don’t be sad thinking about me. This really is a neat place. Grandma and Grandpa met me as soon as I got here and showed me around some, but it will take a long time to see everything. The angels are so cool. I love to watch them fly. And, you know what? Jesus doesn’t look like any of his pictures. Yet, when I saw Him, I knew it was Him. Jesus himself took me to see GOD! And guess what,
Mom? I got to sit on God’s knee and talk to Him, like I was somebody important. That’s when I told Him that I wanted to write you a letter, to tell you good-bye and everything. But I already knew that wasn’t allowed. Well, you know what Mom? God handed me some paper and His own personal pen to write you this letter. I think Gabriel is the name of the angel who is going to drop this letter off to you. God said for me to give you the answer to one of the questions you asked Him ‘Where was He when I needed him?’ “God said He was in the same place with me, as when His son Jesus was on the cross. He was right there, as He always is with all His children. Oh, by the way, Mom, no one else can see what I’ve written except you. To everyone else this is just a blank piece of paper. Isn’t that cool? I have to give God His pen back now. He needs it to write some more names in the Book of Life. Tonight I get to sit at the table with Jesus for supper. I’m, sure the food will be great. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. I don’t hurt anymore. The cancer is all gone. I’m glad because I couldn’t stand that pain anymore and God couldn’t stand to see me hurt so much, either. That’s when He sent The Angel of Mercy to come get me. The Angel said I was a Special Delivery! How about that?

Celebrating love

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

Today, we went to a lovely wedding.  Our friend from Lighthouse, Dean and Elisa got married.  Both of them are very gentle, loving, smart, and beautiful/handsome. “Golden Boy and Jade Girl” and “Heavenly couple” as in Chinese saying.

Fr. Mercel was the presiding priest, he started the Mass by saying we are “celebrating love”, and started the homily by saying “we all need to be loved and we all need to love”.  The Gospel we used today was the most important commandments, “Love God and Love your Neighbor as yourself”.  It was a very blessed and wonderful wedding.  The banquet was also very eloquently done.  We enjoyed it very much!

May God bless Dean and Elisa, and everyone who participated in the wedding!

Mocha was a good boy

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

Mocha was sick this week, he had running stomach 8+ times in a day.  Poor puppy.  He was weak but still loving.  Instead of sleeping with us, he willingly slept by himself in the area we set up with newspaper.  When he needed to, he always tries to go on the newspaper.

Vacationgal took Mocha to the doctors, they checked everything, but could not find much wrong.  Got some special food and drug for Mocha to take, and now he is much better.  In a couple of day, poor little Mocha lost about 10% of his weight.

Thank God Mocha is much better now, he is jumping and playful again. Yeah!

Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me

Saturday, April 7th, 2007

The question that I had yesterday have been answered at the dinner table…

> BTW, there is a question that I am still contemplating… why did Jesus say “Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.”

My response was more ’spiritual’, even though our sins have been washed away during baptism, during our walk the journey in the ‘world’, we still sins, and when we do, we need to come back to Jesus to get his forgiveness. He washes our feet clean.  If we don’t confess our sin and let him wash our feet clean again, we will have no inheritance with him.
Vacationgal answered more directly and in-line with the what Jesus said directly, basically, its about service.  We need to serve one another, someone we serve others, sometone we receive the service.  If we are too proud to receive service and think we can only provide for others, we have no inheritance or blessings from him.  This is true when we want to pray or pass on blessings to others but some people just don’t want to receive.

This reminded me that a few weeks ago, Fr. Huang from Taiwan gave a special talk and healing service at St. Clare’s.  A lady with gift of vision also gave some talk.  She said when she prays for people, she would see God the Father knelling down in front of people, begging us to give our burden to Him.  This was incredible.  The Lord, the God Almighty, knelling and getting our permission to off load our burden.  It is amazing.  How blessed are the people who is willing to offload the burden to God.

Jesus Remember me…

Friday, April 6th, 2007

Came back from the Holy Thursday Last Supper Mass, the familiar “Jesus Remember me…” song still circles in my mind. “Jesus, remember me, when you come into your kingdom.” It’s the words spoke by one of the 2 criminals died on the cross with Jesus, and Jesus told him “Amen, I say to you,
today you will be with me in Paradise.” All Christians know that we are still criminals, and we are looking forward to the moment, when we leave this world we can humbly say “Jesus remember me…”, and Jesus will come and bring us into Paradise.
Key messages from Fr. Kimm after the Feet Washing ceremony… Jesus stoop low enough to wash his disciples’ feet, am I too proud to forgive someone, or too proud to serve someone? (ok, he actually said about 5 things but I only remembered these 2. :( )
BTW, there is a question that I am still contemplating… why did Jesus say “Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.”
Any, another Lent is coming to close, am I any closer to Jesus?
